How It's Created: David Mellor Cutlery

The precise, elaborate, and creative cutlery crafted by David Mellor is designed to change your life. David Mellor’s namesake is the wonderful cutlery he created, but the result is only part of what makes David Mellor silverware special.

A key figure in British design, David Mellor is particularly famous for his iconic, award-winning cutlery. Made in England with a mix of technology and artisanal hand-finishing, this stunning range of flatware and kitchen knives offers something for everyone. Shop all collections.

Mellor always saw it as his duty to revolutionize standards for design, overseeing every step in the process of creating a finished product: designing, manufacturing, and retailing. The Englishman, who was born and raised in Sheffield, represented a city that already had a deep history with metalworking and cutlery.

Ascending in his field, he moved from specialized individual items to eventually open the David Mellor factory in Derbyshire, which was precisely built for the purpose it was to serve. In fact, all David Mellor buildings are architecturally innovative and some have even won awards for their excellence. The workshops masterfully thread the balance between hand-craft and the magic of machines, leading to the exact yet original David Mellor product.

For his intricate processes and results, David Mellor has earned the title of Royal Designer for Industry, the highest honor in the UK for designers, no matter the application. Needless to say, David Mellor's cutlery is flawless, inside and out.

While David Mellor was a flatware extraordinaire, his mission was always to change lives through his design. This passion led him to pursue other challenges, such as redesigning the English traffic-light system (which is still in use today) and creating a new (albeit controversial) mail collection box.

On a more applicable note, David Mellor also crafted minimal stainless steel cutlery for the UK government, where his work was used in hospitals and other large-scale enterprises.

In 2005, David Mellor retired, giving way to his son, Corin Mellor, to take over his designer role. Today, every David Mellor product at Didriks has been designed by either David Mellor or Corin Mellor, so each piece has the signature Mellor style that sets them apart.

At Didriks, you will find various David Mellor stainless steel cutlery collections to complete your tablescape, like Chelsea, a Corin Mellor flatware creation where elegant perfection meets humble application. Or Odeon, an assertive, beautifully boxy assembly of cutlery. David Mellor’s classic English series adds a third dimension, using definitive tones of hand craftsmanship to put a modern spin on a centuries-old style. Other David Mellor collections include Paris, London, Minimal, and Classic.

In addition to captivating David Mellor flatware, the professional-grade kitchen knives are certainly worth more than just a mention. David Mellor knives are crafted with high-carbon stainless steel and ice hardened to -80 C, a one-two punch that creates a durable and undeniably sharp blade. In the popular Black Handle collection, designed by Corin Mellor, all knives are ice-hardened, including the cheese knife—can you imagine effortlessly slicing through a hunk of cheese with one of these?

If your knives ever lose their edge, as is inevitable for any well-used knife, be sure to bring them into Local Root, where expert, quick-turnaround knife sharpening services are offered in addition to a wide array of kitchen products.
We are currently in the midst of our David Mellor Summer Sale, which ends July 20th, so now is a great time to shop David Mellor in-store or online at Didriks, where you can also find an exceptional variety of dinnerware, knives, and outdoor furniture necessities.
