Cocktail #6: Winds of Fall

First of all, this post is 3 business days late. My apologies.

Why? I ate some bad, bad, takeout and missed a couple of days of work.

Second, this one is better late than never. It's super tasty.

I don't think there's a more ubiquitous fruit in the world than apples.

It appears in the book of Genesis, specifically the Garden of Eden as the forbidden fruit, the first fruit even, Snow White bites into one and falls into a coma, Gwyneth Paltrow's first born is named, ridiculously, Apple.

Idiomatic phrases abound with apple references: "A apple a day...", "Comparing apples...", "One bad apple...", "The Big Apple", "Apple of my...."

There are traditional activities involving apples like going apple picking, bobbing for apples.

Isacc Newton mythology has inspriation striking him via an apple falling on his head.

And Steve Job's Apple. So cool. I've been looking and re-looking online at the iPhone 4S lately, contemplating Siri, trying to imagine how the magic machine will feel in my hand. In my hand. How my life will change for the better if I get it.... I digress.

My point is, however common and tired the apple may seem piled up at Whole Foods, the tedium of the number of apple picking albums on Facebook I end up skipping over, the avoidance of sad, tasteless factory baked pies stacked 20 cardboard boxes high or the monster sized pies at Costco that only a family of 20 could possibly finish, nothing beats watching my mom expertly peel a giant Fuji apple imported from Korea in one long peel on Christmas morning and then hand me a huge wedge where I can see the apple sugar marbling the crisp flesh.

But Christmas is still several weeks away. In the mean time, try this apple inspired cocktail. As per usual, I love the fact that it calls for a garnish so that I can munch through my cocktail. And using fresh apple juice is a must.


Winds of Fall Serves 1

Ingredients

  • 2 ounce Bourbon
  • 2 ounce fresh apple juice
  • 1/2 ounce lemon juice
  • 1/2 to 1 ounce maple syrup
  • 1/4 ounce campari
  • apple slices for garnish
  • ice

Directions

  1. Add all ingredients into a shaker.
  2. Shake and strain over large ice cubes.
  3. Garnish speared apple-slices.
